Dear readers!


Our July forecast began with regret concerning Belarus entering an instability period which considerably complicated forecasting. Under such circumstances behavior of the only character on the Belarusian political stage becomes more and more unpredictable. In July we had expected some more of the inadequate statements on his part, and they followed. The information “war” started by the run of the movie “The Godfather” on the NTV channel became the main reason for such statements. Further the events began to develop in the “you are a fool yourself” mode, and while the July issue of the “InfoFocus” was being made ready the creative potential of the parties was far from being exhausted.
Who will eventually prove to be the winner? Our answer is as follows: in Russia – the duumvirate, in Belarus – the “Godfather”. There is no other option, if we take into account domination of state mass media on the territory of both union states. Besides, Belarus entered the pre-election streak of social payments’ growth (another pension rise was announced in July). In such circumstances the only person who takes care of the people’s well-being gets covered with Teflon, speaking figuratively, and no information “dirt” can stick to him.
After the burying in the Church of all the Saints the remains of soldiers fallen in battles of 1812, 1915 and 1943 we expected new creative steps on the part of the state ideologists. However, they confined themselves to the performance “WATCH OUT! IT STINKS! IT IS THE NTV CHANNEL!” which came down to placing stickers on garbage bins in the center of the city. However, having realized by the end of the month that the July creative plan had found itself in jeopardy, the Ministry of information rubber-stamped two warnings to the newspaper “Nasha niva” for spreading incorrect information. The editorial board took the garbage creative idea for a promotion action of the NTV channel. Ministry officials doubted that performance organizers had set such a goal and addressed the BRYU with a formal inquiry. The BRYU members did not, of course, confirm the promotion character of their action.
As for the show named “a battle for the harvest” this time the head of state has chosen Gomel region as the venue for it. As it was to be expected, he gave many concrete instructions not only to the representatives of his top-down command at all levels, but directly to combine operators. He could not do without the traditional appeals to toughen the discipline, either.
